Diamond Carat

Diamond carat is the standard unit of mass used to measure the “weight” of diamonds and most other gems.

1 Carat (Ct.) = 0.20 grams

The word ‘carat’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Keration’ which means kernel of the Carob bean produced by the Locust tree.  The kernel of the Carob bean weighs approximately 0.197 grams, which is why a Diamond Carat is 0.20 grams as a standard.

Weight should be recorded to accuracy of 2 decimals or a hundredth of a carat.  Rounding up the second decimal is unacceptable, unless the third decimal is a 9.

Generally, the more a stone weighs, the more valuable that stone will be.  In other words, the greater the diamond carat, the greater the value.
