Diamond Clarity | Diamond Quality

The value of a diamond is largely dependent upon a number of factors, of which diamond clarity is one.  Diamond clarity is used to describe either the absence or presence of any imperfections inside and/or outside of the diamond.

Each diamond has internal characteristics referred to as inclusions.  The number, position, colour, size and nature of these inclusions are what determine the grade of diamond clarity.

In addition to internal characteristics, diamonds also possess external characteristics referred to as blemishes.

It is the absence of blemishes that differentiates a Flawless (FL) from an Internally Flawless (IF) diamond.

These inclusions are simply imperfections formed before, during or after crystalisation of the diamond.

Diamond clarity is graded under 10X magnification.  If under these conditions an imperfection cannot be seen, it is considered to be of no importance.

Diamond clarity is normally graded on the following scale, where FL is the most rare:

  • FL-IF (Internally-Flawless)
  • VVS1-VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included)
  • VS1-VS2 (Very Slightly Included)
  • SI1-SI2 (Slightly Included)
  • P1-3=I1-3 (Pique=Imperfect)

It is worth noting that inclusions can only be seen with the naked eye if they are of the P=I grade.  As you can see from the above, the majority of diamonds with flaws look perfect to the naked eye.  It is only under a jeweller’s magnifying loupe that the great majority of imperfections can be seen.  This said though, diamond clarity is a big factor determining the value of your diamond.
