Diamond Fluorescence

Diamond fluorescence refers to the light certain diamonds may emit when under UV or X-ray.  This light is generally blue in colour, however it can also be a variety of other colours.

Diamond fluorescence can sometimes help to differentiate a real diamond from a fake.  Gemologists will put a gem under a UV lamp and if it emits a blue light, it is almost certainly a diamond.  This said though, if it does not emit a blue light, that doesn’t necessarily mean the gem is not a diamond.  Not all diamonds have fluorescence.
