Fake Diamonds Explained
One question commonly asked of me as a certified diamond dealer is, “How can I tell the difference between a real diamond and a fake diamond?”
Fake diamonds or imitation diamonds are often Zircon based imitations. An imitation diamond will often break up white light in a manner different to diamonds, resulting in more yellow-orange and to a lesser extent, blue colour flashes.
Although spotting a fake diamond to the untrained eye may be difficult and sometimes even impossible, to a professional, the difference will often be picked up from a distance.
How to spot a fake diamond yourself
One simple test you can do to determine whether a diamond is a real diamond or a fake diamond, is to place the diamond face down on a piece of paper with a line on it. If the line is visible through the stone, then chances are that stone is a fake diamond.
Imitations or fake diamonds, are usually less hard and will often show scratches on both the surface and the outer rim or girdle.
Also, one can also cover an imitation diamond with the damp of one’s own breath. Due to the high thermal conductivity of a real diamond, the damp will disappear relatively quickly from its surface.
Don’t be fooled!
To ensure you buy a genuine diamond and don’t fall into the trap of paying diamond dollar for a fake diamond, ensure you will receive adequate consumer protection.
Consumer protection starts with a laboratory Grading Report and ends at the integrity of the retailer.
