Also known as the navette cut diamond, the marquise cut diamond is referred to as a fancy cut diamond. The marquise cut diamond is a football shaped diamond. It is a long oval shape and is stretched out to a point at each end. The traditional marquise cut diamond has a ratio of length to width of between 1.75 and 2.25, however, generally a cut with a ratio of 2 to 1 is preferred for the classic shaped marquise cut diamond.
Marquise cut diamonds are often seen as the centre diamonds for engagement rings, and can be used to create an illusion of elongating the fingers. This makes the fingers look long and elegant, which is why the marquise cut diamond is popular for women who want a feminine, elegant look. They make fantastic engagement ring diamonds.
Typically, a marquise cut diamond has 56 facets, however there are no strict rules when it comes to this.

What is the history of the marquise cut diamond?
The marquise cut diamond’s creation has been credited to King Louise XV of France. He is believed to have commissioned the court jeweller to create a special diamond cut to resemble the shape of the mouth of his mistress. His mistress was Marchionness Madame de Pompadour. With these instructions, the jeweller created the marquise cut diamond.
