Radiant Cut Diamond
What is the radiant cut diamond?
Put simply, the radiant cut diamond is the result you get when you incorporate the brilliance of a round diamond with the elegance of an emerald cut. The radiant cut diamond is either a square or rectangular shaped diamond and has cut corners. Brilliance is a stand out with the radiant cut diamond, and it is made possible with its 70 facets.
Although ideally the radiant cut diamond should have 70 facets (25 on the crown, 8 on the girdle and 37 on the pavilion), the typical radiant cut diamond will more than likely have 62 facets (25 on the crown, 8 on the girdle and 29 on the pavilion).
The design of the radiant cut diamond is such, that it requires more of its weight to be directed into the depth of the diamond to achieve optimum brilliance. This is why it is common to find radiant cut diamonds with depth percentages of 70-78%.
The radiant cut diamond is the first of the rectangular cuts to have a brilliant pattern on both the crown and the pavilion. This adds to the brilliance and sparkliness of the diamond, and is one of the ways to differentiate it from an emerald cut diamond.
The radiant cut diamond is a fancy cut diamond, and although it was originally a patented design, the radiant cut diamond’s design is now public domain.
What is the history of the radiant cut diamond?
The very first radiant cut diamond was created by Henry Grossbard, and he called it the Original Radiant Cut. It was invented in 1977, and signified a new demand for the square or rectangular shape – but this time, without compromising on the brilliance. After all, the radiant cut is the result of combining the elegance of an emerald cut with the brilliance of a round cut.
In 1977, the radiant cut diamond was patented, but today it is in the public domain.
